(Work in Progress)

Urban Edimental. Leigh Woods, Bristol.

A walled garden in Leigh Woods, Bristol, is being reimagined as a productive garden that looks good from the house all year round. The clients wanted a place to grow food and catch the sun, with the trampoline staying and the skate ramp going.

Three sculptural Corten steel planters take centre stage, each anchored by a timber obelisk for climbing beans and sweet peas. Seasonal crops grow around them, so the vegetables become a feature rather than rows of beds. Behind, the borders blend edible and ornamental plants, chosen to thrive on free-draining limestone soil and cope with hotter summers.

The old lawn is becoming a wildflower meadow, with mown paths leading to a central clearing for lounging in the sun. A low stepover fruit cordon marks the edge of the productive garden, with blossom in spring and fruit in autumn.

The design has been approved and the meadow will be sown this autumn, with the remaining planting following over winter and next spring. More images to follow as the garden develops.
