Set behind a Grade II listed Victorian villa in Peckham, this compact urban garden was asked to do a remarkable amount. The clients wanted lush, naturalistic planting, space for entertaining, food growing, wildlife habitat, a workshop studio, children's play space and multiple places to sit and unwind, all within a long, narrow footprint.

The key challenge was creating a sense of discovery and immersion without making the garden feel overcrowded. Existing level changes and an enclosed sunken terrace left the space feeling disconnected from both the house and the garden beyond. The design resolves these awkward transitions through a series of carefully considered terraces and pathways that improve flow while drawing the eye deeper into the landscape.

Inspired by Japanese design principles rather than Japanese garden clichés, the scheme focuses on sequence, concealment and revelation. Layered planting and curving paths create depth and intrigue, encouraging exploration while subtly screening different functions from one another. At the heart of the garden, a wildlife pond becomes both a focal point and a habitat, while a beautifully crafted timber studio celebrates making and craftsmanship rather than hiding it away.
